Our Story

Bethany Mae is a multidimensional artist. As a seamstress, muralist, screen printer, painter, poetess, spiritual being and multidimensional creator, my process focuses on the intricacies of human experience. Human (beings) :: experiencing life on earth as species homo:sapien. My primary inspiration and focus is the concept of Love. How does that concept shape who we are?

Love nourishes; when we (in)body love, love heals all.

I hold a BFA from Syracuse University (2008) in Costume Design. My mother taught me to sew as a child - having come from a lineage of master dressmakers. I grew up collecting and later selling vintage clothing, consuming Vogue and replicating photoshoots for my Barbies.

I moved to Los Angeles in 2009, there working in the Film Industry as a hair and makeup artist simultaneously designing and making costumes for local theater.

Continuing working in salons as a cosmetologist until 2019, I left the film industry in 2015, taking the scenic route via meeting a screen printing artist and renting a studio down the street from my apartment. Then, in 2017 I met a muralist who invited me along to Nepal where happenstance and hark work combined to allow me to not only travel to Kathmandu, also step in to complete 2 of my own. We painted a total of 4 murals backed by Wall of Hope; an educational organization centered on ending violence toward women and children. Murals were painted on Australian Embassy, European Union Embassy, a girl’s school and Zoo walls with assistance from school children, passers by and rescued sex-trafficked women.

In 2018 I traveled back to Patan Dhoka in Nepal for a 3 month artist residency through MCube Gallery. There, I taught art classes for children and adults.

At the end of 2018, I moved back to Minneapolis. Now, I have a mobile mending business, I organize events, facilitate artistic practices and host sewing classes while also raising a beautiful child and connecting deeper with our mother earth.

This summer you can catch me in my Mobile Mending and Screen Printing Trailer at Open Market Pop Ups. Click through my website to take a sewing class, or contact me for commissions, collaborations or questions. The Calendar tab is a great place to start!
One day I hope to compile my past blogs, writings and adventures into a book.
